Euthanasia and the mentally ill

Postby Danny » 12 May 2016, 12:03

Disturbing article here:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/05 ... anasia-du/

The most worrying portion (hat tip to WD’s Twitter account):

“the Dutch euthanasia commission published an account of a Dutch sex abuse victim in her 20s with conditions including “therapy resistant” anorexia and chronic depression, whose request for euthanasia was granted”

There are strong arguments in favour of sparing the terminally ill further suffering by allowing them to end their lives – yet neither depression nor anorexia are terminal illnesses. Many have struggled through serious mental illness to lead full, healthy lives.

Providing a physically healthy yet psychologically ill individual with the means to commit suicide is no less heartless than condemning them to rot behind an asylum's walls.

Ultimately, this poor woman is as much a victim of moral fashion as of her demons; a victim of an era that exalts feelings – even delusional feelings – and consent – even the consent of unbalanced mind – above all other moral considerations.

This is something new, unprecedented in all history - and it points to something deeply rotten in our culture.

I agree completely. Douglas Murray also had an article about this case in the spectator.

I think that the problem of continuing life-extending treatment to the terminally ill and hopelessly suffering is one of those problems which is best solved without setting formal guidelines and an official procedure. Let the patient and doctors and family confer, and rely on human judgment. This will not eliminate all cases of unnecessary suffering or medical murder, but turning it into a bureaucratic procedure may result in something much worse.
