On honour(killings) and respect

Postby Yessica » 16 Nov 2013, 07:12

This is not a rhethoric question. I rarely asked them.
In the last decades Westerners have become familiar with the word "honourkilling" in which a woman will be put to death for such "crimes" as adopting a western life-style.

I also see honour often as a tattoo of a thug. Same goes for "word is bond".

When interviewed thugs will often say that they wanted to be respected. That is why they break people nose. For some reason they must believe that people respect the person who violently attacked them.

I wonder what the concept of honour / respect is that is the root of this behaviour. It might be ill-translated.
