Obituary for Ivan Illich (2003)

Postby Mike » 22 Feb 2015, 11:05

I recently discovered this TD article from over a decade ago about a largely forgotten radical of the 1970s. If you're familiar with Illich and his work, it's quite an interesting read - I was pleased to note that TD's view of Deschooling Society, which I re-read a few years ago, was exactly the same as mine; namely that it's mostly silly, but does contain some sensible and prescient criticisms of the galloping growth of the education bureaucracy (which has only gathered pace since then).

TD is also right to say that Illich was very hard to pin down in traditional political terms; most saw him as an archetypal radical of the left, but it wasn't quite that simple (in one section of Deschooling Society, for instance, Milton Friedman is mentioned with obvious approval).
